大石瓢壶
Discover the 大石瓢壶 (Da Shi Piao), a larger variation of the classic Stone Ladle teapot design
The Da Shi Piao Hu (大石瓢壶): The Grand Stone Ladle
The Da Shi Piao Hu, or Large Stone Ladle teapot, represents a scaled-up interpretation of one of Yixing’s most beloved classical forms. While the standard Shi Piao is prized for its elegant proportions and refined lines, the Da Shi Piao takes these same design principles and amplifies them, creating a vessel that commands attention through both its size and its masterful execution of traditional form.
Understanding the Stone Ladle Legacy
The Shi Piao design traces its origins to the Mansheng teapot styles, a collection of classical forms developed during the Qing Dynasty. The name “Shi Piao” (石瓢) literally means “stone ladle,” referencing the simple stone vessels with handles and spouts that were used in ancient China for pouring water or other liquids.
The Da Shi Piao maintains the essential characteristics that define the Stone Ladle family: a triangular body that tapers from a wide shoulder to a narrower base, a straight spout that extends confidently from the body, and a handle that arcs gracefully to provide both visual balance and practical comfort. What distinguishes the “Da” (large) version is its increased capacity and the technical challenges that come with scaling up a classical design while maintaining its proportional harmony.
Design Characteristics
The Large Stone Ladle typically features a capacity ranging from 220ml to 300ml or more, compared to the standard Shi Piao’s 150-200ml range. This increase in size isn’t merely about holding more tea—it fundamentally changes how the pot feels in the hand, how it pours, and what kinds of tea sessions it’s best suited for.
The body maintains the characteristic inverted triangle shape, with the widest point at the shoulder gradually tapering toward the base. This geometry isn’t arbitrary—it allows tea leaves ample room to unfurl and circulate during brewing, while the narrower base helps concentrate heat and maintain brewing temperature.
The spout on a well-made Da Shi Piao extends in a straight, confident line, often with a slight upward tilt at the tip. This design ensures a controlled, clean pour even when the pot is full. The larger size means the spout must be proportionally robust to handle the increased volume of liquid without dripping or sputtering.
The handle typically features a flying or arcing form that provides clearance for the hand while maintaining visual balance with the spout. On larger pots, the handle must be both substantial enough to support the weight of a full pot and comfortable enough for extended pouring sessions.
Clay and Craftsmanship
Creating a successful Da Shi Piao requires exceptional skill. As the size increases, so do the technical challenges. The walls must be thick enough to provide structural integrity but not so thick that the pot becomes heavy and unwieldy. The clay must be worked carefully to prevent warping during drying and firing—larger pieces are more susceptible to these issues.
Traditional Yixing clays—whether purple zisha, red zhuni, or pale duanni—each bring different qualities to the Da Shi Piao form. The choice of clay affects not just the appearance but also the pot’s heat retention properties and how it interacts with different teas over time.
Tea Pairing and Brewing
The larger capacity of the Da Shi Piao makes it particularly well-suited for certain brewing scenarios. It’s an excellent choice for group tea sessions where you want to serve multiple people without constantly refilling. The increased volume also makes it ideal for teas that benefit from more generous leaf-to-water ratios, such as aged oolongs or ripe pu-erh.
The pot’s heat retention characteristics make it especially good for darker oolongs, black teas, and pu-erh varieties that require sustained high temperatures to fully express their character. The triangular body shape promotes good circulation during steeping, ensuring even extraction across all the leaves.
A Timeless Classic
The Da Shi Piao represents the Yixing tradition at its finest—taking a classical form and executing it with precision and understanding. It’s a design that has endured because it works, both aesthetically and functionally. Whether you’re brewing for yourself or sharing tea with friends, the Large Stone Ladle offers a perfect balance of tradition, beauty, and practical excellence.
